4 ideas for winter hikes with or without snow!

Stunning panoramas, a polar atmosphere frozen in time, vineyards at rest - come and hike in Alsace with me this winter! Here are my 4 favourites to experience all winter has to offer!

The immersive hike: sunsets and pensive panoramas

The frozen landscapes lend a mystical atmosphere to the mountains of Alsace, and I know all the breathtaking and legendary spots. Follow me above 1,000 m to discover my two favourite viewpoints in the heart of the Bruche Valley:

Le Champ du Feu, with its high-altitude mountain pastures and domed peat bogs, is a natural area as fragile as it is exceptional. The landscapes glow with the blazing sunset.

The sacred mountain of Donon and its legendary temple boast a breathtaking panorama. The 360° view overlooks Alsace and Lorraine majestically converging. I like taking a walk on the archaeological discovery trail, dotted with drawings that blend myth and reality.

The hike through the heart of the Alsace Wine Route

The Alsace Wine Route is renowned worldwide for its exceptional natural beauty. The winter light accentuates its peaceful charm. The best way to experience the route is to take one of the many wine paths that cross the itinerary. The trail in Mittelbergheim, a small picturesque wine village and one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, is definitely my favourite. It meanders through the vineyards of Zotzenberg Grand Cru.

Before stopping for a tasting, take the time to read the signs that mark the trail. You'll learn about the passionate work of the winemakers, the unique wild tulip that sprinkles gold across the vineyards in spring, as well as the 7 famous grape varieties of Alsace. The stunning panorama of Mittelbergheim, the vineyards, and Andlau Castle will leave you with fond memories of this unforgettable hike.

The Great North hike: a mountain inn and a reindeer refuge

Tara, Neige, and Vaasa warmly welcome you to discover their refuge at an elevation of 1,096 m in the heart of the forest surrounded by charming wooden cabins. My reindeer friends roam freely here alongside around thirty companions! The amazing Schantwazen Farm also teaches visitors about the Sami culture (a reindeer herding people) in an inspiring museum. A truly magical moment!

Just a 15-minute walk away, discover an exceptional natural site: Lac Vert. With an icy backdrop and surrounded by fir trees, the lake puts on a stunning show. My gourmet tip: take a break at the Auberge du Tanet to taste the local speciality, Roïgabrageldi. A dish made from stewed potatoes, it's easier to pronounce with a mouthful, and so comforting after our amazing outing!

The iconic hike: accessible to all, a medieval visit in store!

What if you seized this winter hike take the medieval castle of Haut-Koenigsburg by storm? This iconic tourist spot in Alsace stays open in winter. It towers over the entire plain, offering beautiful panoramas. On a clear day, I could even see the Alps! Starting at Schaentzel Pass, the hike to the monument takes just 1 hour, in all seasons. The stroll invites you to explore picturesque curiosities like ruins of Oedenburg, with views of the Alsace Plain and the Black Forest.

Has snow blanketed the landscapes?

Bundle up in your jackets and hats and fill up your thermos with mulled wine – I've selected some snowshoeing adventures for you!

My tip: access to the trails is free, you just need to rent snowshoes if you don't have your own.

Caution: in winter, nature is more delicate. Please respect the designated conservation areas.
