A walk to listen to the alluvial forest.

Young, spontaneous and lush, the Gerstheim forest is a special case. Between the Grand Canal and the Old Rhine, it is subject to the whims of the river and the wind. Too isolated to be profitable, too young to have the status of an exceptional forest, it is virtually untouched by human intervention. Every year, the river makes a thunderous entrance, overturning what the vegetation, in its rush to reach the light, hurriedly builds up. Chaos is the rule, verticality the exception. How does an island in the Rhine work? What is an alluvial forest? What fauna can be found there?
