Sugar

The sugar capital of eastern France, the town of Erstein is also listed as a "Site remarquable du Goût" - a label given to places of culinary significance - for its sugar-production activities. The sugar mill, created by a group of farmers and industrialists, was opened on 27 December 1893. A sugar refinery then opened on the same premises in 1895. It was a great success right from the start. The conflicts of the 20th century did not get the better of the sugar mill, which is still prosperous today, producing 125,000 tonnes of sugar per year.
