Châtenois

Châtenois, ideally situated on the wine route, is a fortified town with a unique charm. Two walls surround the town, dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. The ramparts are staged each year during the traditional "Fête des Remparts" in June.

These sites are listed as Historic Monuments thanks in particular to the Tour des Sorcières, a 15th century Gothic tower gate located on the second enclosure; and the 18th century church of St Georges. Push open the door of the latter and you will discover one of the masterpieces of the organ builder Silbermann.

From the church, take a walk along the interpretation trail along the ramparts and then descend to the heart of the village. Get lost in the narrow streets and let yourself be seduced by the typical Alsatian houses where geraniums bloom on the balconies every summer.

You can also explore the surrounding cycle paths during the annual slow up in June, hike through the vineyards, on the GR5 trail or on the Chemin de Compostelle.

End your walk with a visit to a wine cellar and stop at one of the good restaurants in the commune which offer various local specialities such as tarte flambée.

Châtenois is a small town full of charm, offering a perfect combination of traditional Alsatian architecture, local gastronomy and the surrounding nature.
