The construction of the Abbey of Saints Peter and Paul in the 7th century enabled the birth and then the prosperity of Wissembourg. To defend itself, the town was surrounded by fortifications and 4 castles. Although only one of the four castles remains, Château St Paul, to the north of the town in the vineyards, the abbey and the fortifications are still visible around the historic town.
