Jardin et vestiges
" Built according to the traditional scheme of medieval gardens, it is composed of a vegetable garden, an orchard, a garden of simple plants and ornamental lawns. Particular care has been taken to create a collection of plants of sometimes distant origins. "
In the ruins of Mittelhausen Castle, the remains of a Wasserburg (a castle on the plain surrounded by water) from the 12th - 14th century, the garden was first designed around a plant emblematic of the castles of the region: Eranthis hiemalis, an oriental flower brought back by the Crusader knights.
Built according to the traditional layout of medieval gardens, it is composed of a vegetable garden, an orchard, a garden of singles and ornamental lawns. Particular care has been taken to build up a collection of plants of sometimes distant origins. Its formal realisation is the work of a landscape architect, who has reconciled an evocation of the history of the gardens with a contemporary approach, emphasising the romanticism of the ruins. Low stone walls support the squares of simple, joyful jumble of colours, textures and scents. The other spaces contain a collection arboretum and are a laboratory for experimentation for landscape architects and some European artists.
Wooden structures mounted on rods of different heights will draw visitors' attention to selected pieces of the site: a contemporary interpretation of the sights used by topographers in the 18th century.
Landscape artists will be present during the public opening hours.
