The exhibition dedicated to the House of Habsburg in Ensisheim explores the major role played by this dynasty in Europe and their influence on the town and surrounding area for almost five centuries, from the 12th to the 17th century. As the capital of their hereditary possessions (the Vorlande), Ensisheim was a center of power and administration for the Habsburgs. The exhibition is interactive, immersing visitors in the world of this period through various themes such as battles, nobility, military strategy, administration and justice. Unpublished archival documents and a model of the Habsburg castle in Ensisheim, accompanied by a multimedia device, are featured. In addition, a statue of Emperor Maximilian I, on loan from Austria, marks the symbolic return of this figure who had visited the town to see his famous meteorite, also exhibited in a renewed museography. The exhibition retraces a period when Alsace did not yet exist as such, but was part of a Rhine area interacting with present-day Switzerland and Germany. Visitors can discover more than 50 historical exhibits, and enjoy a variety of multimedia and play materials. Guided tours, school workshops and activities are offered in three languages (French, German, English), making the exhibition accessible to all.
