The Marseillaise

'Rouget de Lisle chantant la Marseillaise pour la première fois', Isidore Pils, 1849 - Musée historique de Strasbourg - Photo Mathieu Bertola

Composed in 1792 by Rouget de Lisle for the Army of the Rhine in Strasbourg, La Marseillaise, created as a battle hymn, became famous worldwide as a revolutionary song before it was chosen as the French national anthem in 1879. This exhibition will take a broad, multidisciplinary approach to exploring the subject, cross-referencing the fields of history, musicology and the visual arts, from the late 18th century to the present day.
