Situated to the south of the main island, this district once crisscrossed by canals was traditionally the boatmen’s and fishermen’s quarter, as recalled by its street names including rue St-Nicolas-aux-Ondes or rue de la Tour des Pêcheurs. Among other things, it is home to the municipal baths, the Higher School of the Decorative Arts with its attractive fresco-decorated façade, the Zoological Museum and the Zurichois fountain to name but a few. It is today popular for its contemporary bars and restaurants, art galleries and fashionable shops, which combine to make this warm and friendly area with a village atmosphere one of Strasbourg’s liveliest and most pleasant districts.
