Castle Wasigenstein

The ruins of two adjacent castles dating from the middle of the 13th century, situated on a rocky outcrop separated by a deep split in the rock. Old Wasigstein is on the western rock and New Wasigstein is on the eastern. Partially destroyed during the Thirty Year's War. Still remaining: steps, carved out of the rock face in both castles with apartments, Gothic windows, water storage cisterns and the curtain wall. Made famous by the Waltharilied-saga (Walther's battle against Gunther an Hagen).
